ITNTW: Selena Gomez Claps Back At Body Shamers
It’s been a big few weeks for American actress and singer Selena Gomez. She has achieved tremendous success in her career and she has just became the most followed women on Instagram with 381 million followers, surpassing none other than Kylie Jenner. However, despite her professional accomplishments, she has been subjected to the most recent body shaming scandal after her appearance at the Golden Globes in January 2023.
Body shaming is an ongoing issue that has garnered significant attention in recent years. It has affected countless individuals, including high-profile celebrities like Selena Gomez.
Following the evet, Selena received a barrage of criticism about her weight gain from both online trolls and fashion magazines. Despite her status, she was not immune to the harmful effects of body shaming, which can have significant mental health impacts on individuals.
Selena’s response to the negativity was powerful, calling out the lack of body inclusivity in society and speaking openly about her struggles with lupus, a condition that can cause weight gain and fluid retention. Her most powerful words were instantly viral “I am not a model, never will be”.
In PR It is crucial to recognise that an individual’s body size, shape, and appearance should not be the focus of media attention. From an influencer management perspective, platforms as big as these celebrities, it is vital to provide positive influence for followers and fans. Negative body comments can have a profound effect on both the individual and society as a whole, normalizing harmful attitudes and behaviours in younger generations.
There is also huge speculation across TikTok and the media, that Hailey Bieber is displaying petty ‘mean girl’ behaviour towards Selena with fans digging for evidence of this. Our office is divided on who is team Hailey and team Selena.
Neither Selena or Hailey have addressed the drama but have hinted from what they are posting on social media. If the rumours aren’t true, we beg their talent managers to put out a statement and let the feud end once and for all.
