ITNTW: MET GALA – TRIBUTE TO KARL LAGERFELD

The annual Met Gala, one of the most highly anticipated events in the fashion industry, has just taken place in New York. This year’s gala aims to pay tribute to the legendary fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld, who made a significant impact on the industry with his modernism, visionary designs,  unique creations and impeccable taste. However, this dedication has not been received well by some. Whilst the celebrities who paid $50,000 to attend the event are flaunting their outfits on the red carpet, many are expressing their disinterest for the Met Gala online.

The fashion industry is no stranger to criticism, for a multitude of reasons. Only recently, high-end brand Balenciaga faced public backlash for their campaign that seemed to sexualise young children in the name of fashion. Total chaos came about when it was publicly revealed that Coco Chanel had extensive ties to the Nazi’s. However, the main focus of this article: Karl Lagerfeld. Famous for his comments on the #MeToo Movement that were along the lines of “Don’t become a model if you don’t want to open your legs”. And his comments on plus-size models not belonging on runways. And when he implied all feminists are ugly… the list goes on.

This year’s Met Gala theme raises the age old question: can you separate the art from the artist? Are we able to celebrate the revolutionary moments of an individual, whilst not validating and glorifying their discriminatory viewpoints?

One thing is clear, we all wait every year for the Met Gala theme announcement and all the celebrities, and now influencers, outfits – it has never failed to capture the audience’s attention. Over the years, the event has showcased a range of themes, from “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” to “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” which have inspired countless designers, celebrities, and fans alike. The Met Gala’s themes have a unique ability to spark creativity and ignite conversations, making it a staple event in the fashion calendar. This year’s tribute to Karl Lagerfeld is no exception, and the Met Gala’s theme will undoubtedly bring his innovative spirit to life.
