IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK: The Britney Spears’ story has reached a conclusion.
Whether you have been following or not the #FreeBritney movement is all we have been able to hear about over the past week. Strap yourselves in as this wild rollercoaster of a story just came to a conclusion… sort of!
To add a little background to the story, in 2008 Britney Spears was placed into a conservatorship by her father Jamie Spears after suffering a mental health breakdown – and with so much going on in her life at the time, we don’t blame her. A conservatorship is when someone is given responsibility over another person’s finances as they are not deemed fit to do so themselves. Now over a decade later, she is still under the control of her father and lawyers but now most people are asking – HOW?!
On 23 June 2021, Britney spoke publicly for the first time in court against her father on what the past decade had been like for her. In her testimony she claimed that the situation was “abusive” and that he had “lied and told the whole world I’m OK and happy” when in reality Britney has “been in denial”. Safe to say this reveal shocked the world and brought the #FreeBritney movement to the public’s attention. The latest update on this incredibly curious case is that on 3o June, the presiding judge has now denied (for the third time) Spears’s request for her conservatorship to end. With more questions than answers the situation remains where it has been for far too long and all we’ve got to say is WTH.
From smashing a car window with an umbrella to publicly shaving her head, Britney Spears has too often made headlines for all the wrongs reasons. As a Sydney PR agency, we know all too well how incidents like these can be hugely damaging to celebrities’ reputation.
In this case however, we have watched as the world is left baffled witnessing a woman who is just trying to live her life, but instead is completely controlled by the people or person she should be able to trust the most in what has turned into an extremely sad situation. Britney was a true icon for young girls across the world in the late 90’s, so to see her life unravel in the public eye in such a confronting way is something her fans could have never expected.
