IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK: Victorian Restaurants’ Insensitive Signage Causes a Stir

Controversy has hit a local bar, The Deck located in Shepparton Victoria, after it was discovered they were placing bets on who would win the devastating war unfolding in Ukraine now at the hands of Russia’s dictator, Vladimir Putin.

A worker at The Deck was fired after pinning a sign encouraging patrons to bet on either Ukraine or Russia. This has caused immense backlash, with customers on Facebook calling the sign insensitive “as if people aren’t dying and families aren’t being torn apart.”

The business has had to release a statement regarding the worker, letting people know they are no longer working at the venue, labelling the sign as ‘disturbing’ and ‘unprofessional.’ Some, however insinuating it could not possibly just be one person behind the decision making here.

Small acts like this labelled as jokes in times of uncertainty and sadness is unacceptable. It is easy to read articles about the atrocities happening in Europe now but, it is time to educate yourself on the situation developing and have empathy and compassion for a country under attack. More thoughtfulness in a situation like this could have gone a long way in protecting the business’ reputation.

If you are feeling helpless with the current situation unfolding in Ukraine, spread awareness on your social pages or donate to the below.
