Can the Today Show make a comeback?

Today show ratings hit an all-time low last week, and was even beaten by ABC’s News Breakfast.

The plummeting ratings have been a huge blow for Channel Nine, three months after the network debuted it’s new lineup following Karl Stefanovic’s departure.

But one media expert claims there’s still hope for the once highly-rated breakfast TV show.

Nicole Reaney of InsideOut Public Relations, told Daily Mail Australia on Thursday that the Today show can make a triumphant comeback if producers can find a way for viewers to ‘connect’ with main hosts Georgie Gardner and Deborah Knight.

‘There sure is an opportunity to make a comeback, they need to find that ‘nugget’ that draws in the audience, connects them to the presenters and generates strong word of mouth,’ Nicole said.

‘It’s not a surprise that the ratings have taken a hit, it takes time to rebuild an audience following a sweeping change.’

In January, Georgie, 48, and Deborah, 46, welcomed Tom Steinfort, 35, Brooke Boney, 31, and Tony Jones, 57, to the Today panel and viewers criticised everything from their lack of chemistry to their on-screen presentation.

‘Sorry, does not look right, very awkward, didn’t think it could get any worse but it has,’ read a similar comment.

Another viewer wrote: ‘What a bunch of fakes! Georgie go home, bring back Karl! Switching channels, goodbye boring Today show!!’

However, media expert Nicole claimed bringing back Karl, 44, who was axed last year after 14 years, would be a major setback for Nine.

‘Bringing back Karl would be a setback, it’s never wise to backtrack on decisions made,’ she said.
