ITNTW: The celebrities & designers that met the Met requirements

The Met Gala is the night of nights for celebrity high fashion. Held on the first Monday of May each year, hundreds of A-listers head to New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art dressed extravagantly in themed gowns and suits. 

Raising money for the Museum’s costume institute, this year’s theme was titled “Garden of Time”, in line with the spring exhibition of the institute. Fittingly, the red carpet was filled with an abundance of floral designs. 2024 saw many favourites including Blake Lively, Rihanna and Beyonce not return to the red carpet, however their gap was well and truly filled by the next generation of style icons. The Met red carpet is viewed by millions worldwide, giving their critics on what looks they loved, and who missed the brief. This highly engaged audience presents the perfect opportunity for celebrities and designers to collaborate and get their names in the headlines. High-end designers carefully pick out the celebrities they wish to dress for the event and the designs they’ll be wearing to ensure it puts a positive light on their brand. 

Here’s the looks from this year’s Met Gala perfected the art of partnerships between designers and celebrities. 

Zendaya in Maison Margiela

Zendaya has quickly become a Met Gala icon, praised for her unique looks and dedication to the themes of the night. Returning for the first time in 5 years, the actress was announced as one of the co-chairs for the 2024 event, leading many fans to have high expectations for her outfit. And she did not disappoint. Showcasing not just one, but two entirely different red carpet looks, Zendaya had everyone talking about her outfits. As always, she took a method dressing approach to the night, with hair, makeup and dresses all right on mark for this year’s theme.

Ayo Edebiri in Loewe

Arguably one of the lesser-known stars of the night, Ayo Edebiri, left a mark on her first Met Gala. Dressed by one of the sponsors of the night, Loewe, The Bear star wore a white floor length backless gown that faded into a detailed floral print in its lower half, perfectly addressing the theme and making it one of my personal favourite looks from the night. 

Tyla in Balmain

Another star nailing their first Met Gala appearance was South African singer, Tyla. Skyrocketing to fame after her viral hit Water,  we weren’t expecting to see Tyla in headlines for this year’s Met, nevertheless she delivered one of the most talked about looks. She wore an intricately designed gown made of sand and micro crystals accompanied by an hourglass shaped purse, a nod to the ‘time’ theme. It’s clear her outfit was a crowd favourite. 

Sabrina Carpenter & Barry Keogh in Burberry

Talk about a hard launch! Although the pair had been spotted together in public over past months, Sabrina & Barry left it to the Met Gala to make their official red carpet debut as a couple and people were loving it! Both their Burberry looks included matching velvet, tying them together, but still held their own unique elements. Keogh’s Victorian looking suit was inspired by the character of Count Axel in J.G. Ballard’s short story The Garden of Time, and received praise from fans for successfully incorporating the theme, something male attendees are often criticised for not doing. 

Phoebe Dynevor in Victoria Beckham

Everyone’s favourite regency era duchess, Phoebe Dynevor, made headlines with her Met Gala debut. The Bridgerton star was the first person ever to attend the Met dressed by Victoria Beckham, and the designer’s first appearance at the event did not fall short. The actress wore a custom mauve coloured lace gown fitted with 300 hand-sewn lace applique flowers. It was the perfect youthful look for Beckham’s brand and had the designer and actress alike praised immensely by the public.
